Bethan Lloyd

The Unbound Voice - Ceremony & Performance

Description: Bethan explores the sublime nature of voice. She’ll guide the group through weird and wonderful sounds to stunning improvisations, helping each person to find their unique voice & a deep connection with the divine nature of sound. After sounding together Bethan will guide the group into a space of deep listening. From there she will share with you her original Welsh songs and improvisations from the land.

Bio: Bethan has spent many years researching voice and how it is used across the globe in ritual, ceremony and magic. She started singing and performing when she was 6 years old, in Wales, where voice is still honoured as an integral part of the culture. Her interest in spirituality was always deeply interwoven with vocal expression. She studied Theology and Religious studies at Cambridge University but ultimately her real studies were experiential and embodied. She lived and studied with Indigenous Tribes in Brazil and Ashrams in India deeply immersing herself in both cultures. Her very deep remembering started however when she returned to her homeland of Wales and spent many months in silence. This re-sensitised her to the needs and the longings of this land, which is still singing and is overflowing with its own indigenous wisdoms. Voice was one of the central modes of entering trance and connecting to forces beyond our everyday experience. By stepping into a ceremony with sound and voice, we are remembering the old ways and allowing the memory to fill us with a deep knowing of land and place.
